 GUIDE TO LIVING ON-CAMPUS

Just so you know . . .

Alcohol and Drugs

Absolutely no alcohol or other drugs will be tolerated on this state campus.  Disciplinary action will be taken with any student violating the alcohol and drug policy.  Additional information outlining policies and procedures is contained in the Student Handbook and in the Residence Hall Handbook.

Bicycles

Bike racks are located at the entrance of all residence halls.  Bikes must be registered with the Hall Director at no charge to the student.  All bike owners will be given a sticker to place on the frame for identification purposes.  The sticker will be good for the entire time you reside on campus.  You must provide a secure lock for your own bike.

Carpet

Carpet is permitted in March/Dake and Connolly Halls.  The “Starter Kit” you received had basic room sizes.  However, we suggest you wait until arrival to get an accurate measurement.

Drapes

We provide drapes.

Hammers, etc.

A limited supply of common hand tools is available for your use in each hall.

Lofts

A bed is provided for each student assigned to live on-campus.  However, should you choose to loft your bed, each loft must be freestanding and follow the guidelines given at the beginning of school.  Because the room sizes and bed frames vary in each building it is advised that you wait to construct the loft until after you arrive.

 Parking

All cars must have a parking sticker that can be purchased at the cashier’s office in the lower level of the Surbeck Center.  Stickers are $35 this year.  Students are allowed to park in the green, gray or no color zones.  Parking in any other area or violation of any traffic regulation will result in a citation.  Fire zones are marked yellow.  The policies will be strictly enforced.

Roommates

Roommates are assigned according to the information you provided on your Housing Application.  We encourage all roommates to complete a Roommate Contract (designed to help resolve issues before they become conflicts).   If you want to change rooms once the semester starts, you must see your Hall Director.  Room changes made without prior written approval from your Hall Director may result in a fine.

\

Telephone

Local telephone service is provided, but you must provide your own telephone.  Each room is equipped with one touch-tone modular jack.  Prior to your arrival on-campus, you should receive information about the state long-distance network, which we recommend.  However, it is your decision as to which long distance carrier you want to do business with and then to make appropriate arrangements.

Visitation

In order to increase the safety and security of all students living on-campus, we do have visitation policies for each hall.  Connolly Hall and March/Dake Halls have limited visitation (non-resident guests may not be in the building at certain times).  Palmerton Hall has a 24-hour visitation privilege.

What to bring . . .

We encourage you to contact your roommate and coordinate what you bring to campus . . . you may not want to make room for two TVs if you both want room for your computers.

Refrigerators

Fridge size is limited to 6 cubic feet.  SDSM&T Residence Life Office has some refrigerators for rent at a $1.50 per week.

Bedding & Pillow

We provide you with a mattress pad—make sure it’s clean and left in the room at the end of your stay in the hall.  Twin extra-long flat sheets will fit all beds—wait to buy fitted sheets until you see the mattress.

Extension Cords

We highly recommend that you invest in surge protector strips for your electrical appliances.  Light duty extension cords are not meant for continuous use—especially not for fridges, TVs, etc.

Other

If you bring other furniture—please no waterbeds—we ask that as you place your extra furniture around your room, you ensure you are not impairing anyone’s ability to leave the room in an emergency.

TVs, VCRs, & Stereos

Network and cable TV are available in all rooms.  Keep in mind when you’re packing your woofers that quiet hours do exist in the residence halls.

 What NOT to bring . . .

Weapons

Rifles, handguns, shotguns, knives, bows and arrows must be stored with the Hall Director in a locked and secured storage area.  Ammunition is not allowed in the residence halls.

Fireworks

Fireworks and other explosive materials are not allowed in the residence halls.

Halogen Lamps

Halogen lamps are not allowed in the residence halls due to potential fire hazard.

Microwaves

Microwaves are not allowed in individual student rooms.  The electrical circuits are not equipped for the additional loads.  Stoves and microwaves are located in designated areas in each hall for student use.

Pets

Small size aquarium fish are allowed in residence hall rooms.  No other pets or animals are allowed in the residence hall rooms.

Questions?

Computers

Connections (much faster than a modem!) to the campus network are available from all residence hall rooms.  The charge is $100 for the academic year or $60 for one semester.  You may use your own network card [10/100 MBPS with 10-base-T connector (RJ45)].  We can provide more extensive support (assistance with drivers, troubleshooting, etc.) for SMC and 3-COM network cards.  Many other cards will work.  We will be ready to hook up connections before classes start—watch our URL for dates and times that the LANcrew will be in your building. (http://support.sdsmt.edu/dorminfo.htm)

Before hookup, you will be required to sign an agreement informing you of your responsibilities and the acceptable-use policy for the residence hall network.  Your activities are also subject to policies concerning acceptable use of computing and networking services at SDSM&T.  You may view the policies at http://support.sdsmt.edu.

If you are interested in participating in the support team for the residence hall network, please contact Kata McCarville, ITS Director, kmccarvi@silver.sdsmt.edu.
