PROPOSAL

The SDSM&T hRb (Hardrocker Recognition Board) mission is to provide high quality recognition experiences and services led by a highly capable, committed, and respectful advisor and committee of students in support of recognizing residence hall students and staff’s academic and personal successes.  The Hardrocker Recognition Board will boldly go where no one has recognized residence hall students and staff before!

When the topic of residence hall recognition comes up one must ask the following questions:

a) Who do we recognize?
b) What do we recognize?
c) Where do we recognize?
d) When do we recognize?
e) Why do we recognize?
f) How do we recognize?
g) What is the difference between recognition and recognizing?
h) What is recognition important?

A) Who do we recognize?

We recognize many individuals in the residence halls.  These individuals include:

1. Students (residents, student leaders, wing reps., hall council members/officers and RHA Executives.)
2. Paraprofessional staff (resident assistants),
3. Professional staff (Director of Residence Life, Residence Life Secretary, Asst. Directors of Residence Life, Residence Life Staff Assistant, Residence Hall Maintenance worker, and Residence Life Custodians).

B) What do we recognize?

We recognize the hard work and well-done performances of our residence hall
students and staff.  We also recognize individual residence hall programs and floor
communities,

C) Where do we recognize?

We recognize these residence hall individuals through many different mediums.  Some of these mediums include:

1. Monthly flyers posted throughout the residence halls which specifically identify and recognize the winners of each award.
2. In the Tech. student newspaper
3. Posting on the internet, via the Department of Residence’s new website.
4. Possibly via E-Mail either campus wide or just residence hall students.
5. End of the year recognition banquet, where “of the year awards” are distributed.

D) When do we recognize?

We recognize residence hall individuals and programs at the end of each monthly time period (i.e., August/September, October, November, December-January, February, March, and April), as well as at the End of the Year Banquet in Early May.

E) Why do we recognize?

Residence hall students and staff like to be appreciated and recognized for their
hard work and efforts. When you recognize someone, you are telling him or her
that you appreciate them a lot and it always makes them feel better!  Studies have
shown that positive recognition increases an individual’s or group of individual’s self
esteem and overall sprit.  Positive recognition thus creates a safe, friendly, and
conducive environment for student success.  We recognize students and staff to
encourage and promote their success!

F) How do we recognize?

We recognize residence hall students and staff through the use of Residence Hall Recognition programs outlined in this proposal.

G) What is the difference between recognition and recognizing?

Webster’s Dictionary defines recognition as:

 Webster’s Dictionary defines recognizing as:

By comparing the two definitions above it is easy to assume that recognition is an act of recognizing.

h) Why is recognition important?

Have you ever been recognized for something you have done well? Why do you think you remember being recognized? Fred Bauer, author of the article, "The Power of a Note," tells the following story to underscore the importance of recognition.

Former Ford chairman Donald Petersen, who is largely credited for turning the company around in the 1980's, made it a practice to jot positive notes to associates every day. "I'd just scribble them on a memo pad or the corner of a letter and pass them along," he says. "The most important ten minutes of your day are those you spend doing something to boost the people who work for you." "Too often," he observes, "people we genuinely like have no idea how we feel about them. Too often we think, "I haven't said anything critical; why do I have to say something positive? We forget that human beings need positive reinforcement--in fact, we thrive on it!" (Bauer, 1991, p. 74).

The story illustrates the importance of taking the time to recognize the contributions of others. Notes or e-mails are particularly useful forms of recognition because they do not require a lot of time or money. They are not, however, the only form of recognition. Depending upon who you are recognizing, you might also consider using posters, a letter in an employment file, pieces of candy, items from a Dollar Store, baked goods, signs on a resident's door, a floor/building bulletin board etc.

1. Break down of the Hardrocker Recognition Committee:

The Hardrocker Recognition Committee will be made up of an Advisor (Brian Steinberg- ADRLFP) and 5-6 residence hall students and or resident assistants.  This committee may end up being a subcommittee connected to SDSM&T’s RHA (Residence Hall Association).  One of these student committee members will most likely become the committee chair.

2. Who may nominate:

a) Any SDSM&T Residence Hall Resident or Staff Member through the use of any of the four Hardrocker Recognition Nomination Stations.
b) Each individual SDSM&T Resident Assistant, Staff Member, Wing Representative, and Residence Hall Council (4) will be highly encouraged to turn in one of these nomination forms at the end of each month or recognition period (in the case of the months of August/September and December/January).

3. Nomination forms will be available at Hardrocker Recognition Nomination Stations located in the lobbies of each of the four residence halls.  Completed forms should be turned into any of the three hall directors or to the Department of Residence Life (Palmerton 108).  Gayla or Art should put these forms in Brian Steinberg’s mail box.

4. The hRb will try to have the nomination forms available on the web, via the Department of Residence Life Web Page.  These nominations will then be E-Mailed from the web site back to the hRb committee members.

5. At the end of each month ((September (for the months of August and September), October, November, January (for the months of December and January), February, March, and April)) the  hRb will meet and review all of the nomination forms from each of the four recognition stations and from other individuals (RAs, Hall Council Members, Staff Members, and Wing Representatives).  Decisions will be made on which residence hall programs, floor-communities, students, and staff will receive awards for that particular month.

6. Once the awards for a particular month are decided upon by the hRb committee members, formal notification will be distributed in the following ways:

a) Each individual award winner will receive a personalized certificate recognizing their award.
b) Each individual award winner will receive a nice personalized sign posted by their residence hall room or office recognizing their award.
c) Big personalized posters will be posted in the lobbies of each of the four residence halls identifying each individual award winner.
d) Flyers will be distributed throughout the residence halls identifying each award winner.
e) This same flyer will be posted on the internet via the Department of Residence Webpage.
f) An all campus E-Mail will be posted identifying each individual award winner.
g) Information from the same flyer listed above in a) will be posted in the Tech. Student Newspaper as well as in the Faculty-Staff Newsletter!

7. The following awards will be passed on to MACURH, NACURH, and NRHA for regional and national recognition:

a) Resident Assistant of the Month  (RA if they are a Staff Member of the month).
b) Spotlight of the Month (Custodians, Maintenance Workers, Secretaries, and Staff Assistants.
c) Advisor of the Month  (Hall Directors or Director of Residence Life if they are Staff Member of the Month).
d) Student of the Month (Resident of the Month).
e) Executive Board Member of the Month.
f) Community of the Month (Floor-Community of the Month)
g) Diversity Program of the Month.
h) Educational Program of the Month.
i) Community Service Program of the Month.
j) Social Program of the Month.

HARDROCKER RECOGNITION BOARD NOMINATION CRITERIA

Hall "Of The Month" Award Criteria

The Hall OTM may be awarded to any Residence Hall at SDSM&T

This award is intended to recognize outstanding residence halls since there is currently no other formal way of doing so. The nomination should focus on what the entire residence hall has done to create a big community.

Floor / Community "Of The Month" Award Criteria

The Community OTM may be awarded to any floor / wing community at SDSM&T

This award is intended to recognize outstanding communities since their is currently no other formal way of doing so. The nomination should focus both on what the members of the community have done within their floor / wing, as well as the communities contribution to the residence halls.

Resident "Of The Month" Award Criteria

Any student that lives in on-campus housing at SDSM&T, and that doesn't fit into one of the other categories, may be nominated for the Student OTM award.

Try to answer these questions:

This category is intended for the new or average student leader who puts forth special effort during the month of nomination. We are looking for a special effort or growth on the part of the nominee. We want to know what made this individual extraordinary that month and how they have contributed to making the residence hall system better on our campus. The nominator has much lattitude with this category, so take it away!

Hall Council Member  "Of The Month" Award Criteria

Any wing representative or SDSM&T RHA executive board member can be nominated for the Hall Council Member OTM.

Try to answer these questions:

Be sure the person you are nominating is eligible for the award. The nominee needs to be a floor / wing rep. or  member of the SDSM&T RHA executive board.  If the person fills more than one role which would make him/her eligible for more than one award, the nomination needs to focus on the contributions he/she has made in the role in which he/she is being nominated. This category should be approached similarly to the Resident Of The Month category. We are looking for those special efforts, not just fulfilling the job requirements of the position.

Staff Member "Of The Month" Award Criteria

At SDSM&T any RA (Resident Assistant), HD (Hall Director), Secretary, Custodian, or Director of Residence Life  may be nominated for the Staff Member OTM.

Try to answer these questions:

This is another category in which nominations have been found to be not month specific, so watch for the tendency to include extraneous information. We look for unique contributions to the position, so you might include any difficult tasks this individual had to deal with or crisis situations with which he/she managed to make a difference. Besides programming, you also could include any bulletin boards he/she's created, how he/she might have promoted an advocacy month or week, how he/she has supported his/her fellow staff members, etc. Please be sure to include your relationship to the nominee.

Program “Of The Month” Award Criteria

Any program that a student, RA, or any organization or department organizes or sponsors can be nominated for the Program OTM.

There are seven types of Program OTMs. The seven categories are Social, Unity, Community Service, Cultural / Diversity, Educational, and Sports/ Physical. When nominating a program please list what category you think the program would fall under (one of the above seven categories).

Try to answer these questions:

For both educational and social programs, the judging committees look for creativity, originality, financial feasibility, percent of attendance, and adaptability to other campuses. If the nomination is in conjunctions with a nationally recognized week or holiday, the nomination needs to display how our campus has approached the program in a new or different way. Expanding on the adaptability questions is always helpful; try to list resources used, etc. These nominations are not only giving recognition to a group of leaders having done a super job on programming, but it becomes a resource and a guide for leaders on other campuses. With an educational program nominee, some consideration is given to the relevance of the issue on our campus, so mention if the program addresses a certain problem or circumstance. Timeliness of response to an issue is also a favorable quality in an original program. Nominations for a community service program should list resources contacted, expand on the purpose of the program. and describe the success of the program.
