Values and Beliefs as action statements Exercise

For this exercise you need to have 3 areas in an open room. One area will be one wall, one area will be the middle, and the other area is the other wall. Participants in this exercise will move to the part of the room where you address one of the 3 statements. There are no gray areas here. Every participant must pick one of the 3 (no in-between). At the end of this exercise you will ask everyone how they felt doing this and question anyone who was in any particular category by themselves.

COLLEGE

My focus at college is to have as much fun as possible.

I attend all extracurricular activities, even if they interfere with classes.

My academics come first, but I am involved in extracurricular activities. I am here for an education and extracurricular activities outside the classroom have no place in that experience.

GREEK / NON GREEK
I am Greek and its great!

I’m not Greek but the system itself is OK.

I would never be a part of the obnoxious Greek system.

PERSONAL HABITS

My room is spic and span. My room is neat, but not messy or overly clean. My room is messy.
CLOTHES

I wear the latest fashions. I wear clothes that fit my tastes. What I wear isn’t important.
PEER INFLUENCE

I listen to my friends and classmates to know what I should do. I listen to my friends and classmates to help me make decisions. I make decisions on my own.

POLITICS

My political views are liberal—I would vote for Jesse Ventura for President. My political views are moderate—I would vote for Al Gore. My political views are conservative—I would vote for Jerry Falwell.

I am into politics, big time.

I am interested in some political issues I could care less about politics.

INTERACIAL ISSUES

I would not let a person’s race stop me from dating or marrying someone—I have dated people of different races.

I have close friends of different races, but would never date someone of a different race.

I don’t associate with people of different races; it isn’t right.

FAITH

I believe in a higher power (God).

I believe some kind of higher power exists.

I do not believe in a higher power.

RELIGION

I attend religious services regularly.

I attend religious services on occasion.

I do not attend church services.

SEX

I believe that Sex is an integral part of dating no emotional ties needed.

I believe that Sex is only for a couple with strong emotional ties.

I believe that Sex is for married couples only.

ABORTION

I am Pro-choice

I believe that in certain circumstances abortion is OK.

I am Pro-life

ALCOHOL

I believe that alcohol is an essential part of having fun.

I believe that alcohol is a fine addition for Some occasions.

I don’t drink & neither should others.

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

I believe that CP is the only viable alternative for certain crimes

I am undecided I believe that CP is murder and should Never be used.

DRUGS

I believe that some use of hard drugs is ok

I believe that moderate marijuana use is ok

I believe that any drug use is unacceptable

PARENTING

I believe that parents share equally in child rearing responsibilities.

I believe that both parents are important
but, one parent should take family leave and remain home for at least year.

I believe that mothers should stay home and take care of the children.

FAMILY

My family is very important to Me.

I have moderate family ties.

My family and I are not close.

HOMOSEXUALITY

I believe that homosexuality is a normal healthy Lifestyle.

I don’t agree w/it but it’s none of my business.

I believe that homosexuality should not be tolerated.

I love conflict and disagreeing with

I pick and choose my battles very
