Use of Email and Professional Searches

Here at Binghamton University, I am responsible for the recruitment and
selection of full time, Master's degree Resident Directors.   Over the
course of the past couple of years, I have witnessed some of my colleagues
initiate changes in search protocols (i.e., collecting resumes over email,
communicating with candidates via email, etc..)

This past spring, we attempted to put our campus interview evaluations on
line for our staff to complete instead of sending a paper copy to anyone
who may be able to interview the candidate.  I am toying around with the
idea of somehow making the resumes available for review on line so that we
don't continue to kill trees around here.  But I feel somewhat funny about
this.  Do any of you do this sort of thing?  If so, how do you communicate
to the candidate about your process?

How others are using technology?

Any feedback and reactions would be helpful.

One way that we used technology/email last year in our recruitment of hall
directors was through individual invitations.  We reviewed the professional
statements that candidates made available on websites (like the OPE and
NASPA sites).  Based on those statements and how closely they mirrored our
required and preferred qualifications, I sent email messages to individuals
sharing that I had reviewed their information on the website and their
experiences seemed to mirror those we were seeking in hall director
candidates.  Then I encouraged them to apply, gave them our university and
department websites, and indicated what they needed to send in order to
apply.  Many candidates did apply, and many who were not interested emailed
me, thanking me for the invitation to apply and indicating that they were
not interested.  It took some time, but I do think it was worth the effort.
