 Tile vs. Carpet

At the University of Houston main campus we have employed both the VCT
(vinyl composite tile) and linoleum floor in various apartment situations.
There are both positives and negatives to this approach:

Positives
- lessened retention of smell especially in smokers rooms
- less wear on floor surface necessitating replacement, especially in
entryways
- less damage in areas with refrigerators/kitchenettes due to defrosting,
spillage, food stains, etc.
- ease of replacement of damaged portions due to cigarette burns etc.
(especially with VCT or sectioned tiling)
- divisiveness to mobility and cleanliness and handicapped friendly rooms
(less friction for wheelchair mobility, etc.; less retention of mold,
mildew, dander for sensitive/allergic individuals; and ease of cleaning
bodily fluid spills, etc.)

Negatives
- lessened sound abatement qualities of tile flooring
- or institutional look to facilitate (less warmth and aesthetic value)

Overall we have determined that it is best to look to tiling in areas of
kitchenettes/refrigerators and entryways, or in areas designed as disability
friendly/accommodation conducive spaces.  Otherwise, we look to carpeting
for its warmth and sound abatement qualities.
