Steve:
During my last year as a graduate assistant
Resident Director at Georgia
Southern University I had two buildings, Brannen
and Sanford Halls
(seven RAs total), that had been previously
been run separately.
Initially we struggled with the same issues
you described when trying to
meet as one staff, so I altered how we met.
I met with the Sanford staff for a half hour
to discuss issues related
to Sanford. Then the Brannen staff would
join us to discuss and
disseminate campus-wide information for about
an hour. The Sanford staff
would then leave and I would discuss issues
related to Brannen for about
a half hour. Whenever both staffs were together
I referred to the group
as "Branford" and by the end of the year the
two staffs functioned as
one.

Steven, force rounds, duties, duties together,
meetings together, etc.
Make sure that all functions are done with
one from each. Combine
government. Call yourself Smith-Jones Hall
or whatever. Drill it in
sensitively. Stress the sameness and the bigger
territory to be
responsible for. Be clear about your
intentions. Don't mickey mouse
around. Good luck!
