Colleagues,
I am gathering information for a proposal about RA's/CA's having a 2nd job.
1. Do you allow RA's/CA's to hold another job?
2. If yes, are their restriction as to where
(off campus, on
campus, either)
3. Do you restrict the number of hours?
4. Other restrictions/expectations imposed.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

1. Do you allow RA's/CA's to hold another job?
yes.
2. If yes, are their restriction as to where
(off campus, on campus, either)
no restrictions, except no more than ten hours.
We tend to be more lenient with
on-campus jobs then off.
3. Do you restrict the number of hours?
yes, 10 per week.
4. Other restrictions/expectations imposed.
just keep doing their job, and if the work
begins to impact their position then to
address that with the RA individually.
Please keep in mind that you can tell RA's
what they are to do during the
time they work for you, but you have no right
to tell them what to do with
their own time. I have always tried
to concentrate on the expectations of
the RA job rather than the time outside the
job.

Yes

No restrictions other than hours.
3. Do you restrict the number of hours?
5 hours off campus, 10 hours on campus
4. Other restrictions/expectations imposed.
None
As to Tony's comment about being able to control
what RA's do during the
time that they are not actually working for
you, we take the approach that
any outside committments effect the way an
RA does his or her "job". Since
the RAs are technically 20 hr employees, and
rarely do 20 structured hours
in a week, we place an expectation on them
that they spend unstructured time
in their living areas "building community"
The restriction on hours spent
at other jobs is usually tied to their ability
to do this "community
building" time. The reality is that
the restrictions are only enforced if
we see an RA's other job actually interfereing
with his or her RA
responsibilities, so many RAs do work more
than the allowed number of hours,
and most managed their schedules with no problem.
Hope this helps,
