At Tri-State University (a small, engineering college in NE IND),
freshmen and sophomores (not residing with their parents or married) are
required to live on campus.  There is really not much of a problem as
long as there are not a lot of exceptions made.  Parents like having
their students live on campus at least for the first two years.

At the U of Michigan we do not have a freshmen residency requirement but
we do promise housing to all incoming freshmen. We do not give them
parking, we actually suggest to them not to bring a car to campus.  We
have a wonderful bus system though so not having a car is not a
detriment.

all students may register their cars on campus. these are "fishing
permits" that copst $81 per semester with no guarantee of a space

all lots are open, but one building is open for evening parking for on
campus residents

First off, let me apologize for the cross postings. Hopefully things have
slowed down for most of us with the start of the school year fully
underway.

I have been asked to get a general sense of what other institutions have
in place in regards to parking on campus. Knowing that this is an issue
most of us face, we are interested in creative solutions, or simply,
what is working for you.

1) Are resident freshmen permitted to operate a car on campus and what
exceptions are made to accommodate special requests? Do upperclassmen
attempt to register vehicles for freshmen?

2) Are resident students with authorized vehicles permitted to park in
lots where commuters park or are they required to park in lots near
their residence facility?

We are a small, private, four year institution (682 students out of an
enrollment of 2100 live on campus). Thank you for your attention and
comments in advance.
