 Fire Alarm / Fines Charges

At the University of Houston main campus, upon the finding of responsibility
on the first offense of tampering with fire equipment (pulling alarms,
taping smoke detectors or removing them or their batteries, exiting alarmed
and marked fire doors, etc.), our benchmark sanction is a fine of one
hundred dollars ($100.00) and the placement of the resident on probation for
approximately one semester. On the second offense allegation, we issue a
persona non-grata letter and utilize an interim suspension pending a full
and expedited hearing process, and, upon a finding of responsibility for the
violation, the benchmark sanction is a fine of two hundred dollars ($200.00)
and immediate eviction.

If a guest/non-resident is alleged to have committed the violation, we hold
an expedited administrative hearing and upon determining that the individual
is responsible, we immediately issue a persona non-grata letter and have
safety/police personnel escort them off-campus.  The letter subjects them to
arrest for criminal trespass for re-entry into any of our residential
facilities (usually forever, but it is appealable if the individual should
mature and request to reside within the facilities in the future - I have
only had this happen twice after the issue of a PNG letter).
