Assistant Residence Hall Director
Position Description

The Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARHD) for the Division of Campus Residences is a part-time professional staff member of the Department of Residential Programs, and is directly supervised by a Residence Hall Director (RHD).  The individual in this position assists the Residence Hall Director in all matters pertaining to the management of a residence hall.  Specific areas of responsibilities are outlined below.

I. Supervision
A. In the absence of the RHD, the Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARHD) serves as the primary supervisor of the student staff members.
B. The ARHD meets weekly with a staff of 6-12 Resident Assistants.  The ARHD provides support to the RHD during meetings by completing any or all of  the following tasks:  Creating agendas, facilitating meetings, providing information, and guidance to staff members.
C. The ARHD may also be responsible for holding one-on-one meetings with staff, offering constructive feedback of student staff members job performance, as well as holding staff members accountable for assignments and/or behavior.

II. Advising
A. The ARHD meets weekly with the building legislature’s executive board members a.k.a. LEG E-Board to provide development training and guidance.  Topics that are covered in these sessions include: goal setting , Robert’s Rules of Order, budgeting, community development, delegation skills, public speaking, agenda setting, facilitating meetings, program planning, motivational techniques, team building, student government, supervision, current campus and political issues, time management, stress management, feedback, and constructive criticism.

B. The ARHD provides programming options for legislature officers.  An example of this is a day long retreat during the month of January where the legislature officers evaluate the previous semester, and using the input gained from the evaluation, discuss and plan for the coming semester’s hall government.

C. The ARHD facilitates positive interaction between legislature officers and the residence hall staff, as well as advises and attends all legislature officers’ meetings and activities (i.e. weekly meetings, programs, and events).

III. Programming and Community Development
The ARHD in conjunction with the RHD is directly responsible for the implementation of educational and social programs that promote student awareness, interaction, and community building through the advisement of staff, LEG, and student leaders.

IV. Coordination and Adjudication of Judicial Hearings
A. The ARHD conducts investigations of residents who have allegedly violated the University Conduct Code, and coordinates administrative paper work for
potential hearings.
B. As assigned by the RHD and/or Quad Director, the ARHD may conduct administrative hearings for residents who have allegedly violated minor sections of the University Conduct Code (i.e. failure to evacuate, Health and Safety issues, noise violations etc).

V. Coordination of Monthly Health and Safety Inspections
A. The ARHD  is responsible for the implementation of monthly health and safety inspections.
B. The ARHD follows up judicially on violations of health and safety standards that are not corrected by residents when requested by student staff members.

VI. Emergency Intervention
A. The ARHD is available for crises that occur in the residence hall after regular business hours.
B. The ARHD may be asked to participate in the professional rotating duty schedule for their respective area.

VII. Office Hours
The ARHD holds eight office hours per week in the college office or RHD office.  Office hours are to posted and maintained.

VIII. Fall Training, Staff Meetings and Committee Responsibilities
A. The ARHD is expected to participate in all fall semester training, this includes but is not limited to Professional Staff Training and Resident Assistant Training.
B. The ARHD is expected to attend all weekly Professional Staff meetings of their respective area.
C. To enhance the ARHD’s professional development it is encouraged that ARHD’s sit on Divisional committee’s (i.e. Pro-Staff Selection and Development, Student Staff  Selection and Development, Leadership, Judicial, Major Programs, First Year Residential Experience (FYRE), Public Relations etc.)
D. The ARHD may be asked to present at one of the weekly Thursday morning Professional Staff Development Presentations.

IX. Additional Assignments
 Please note: The ARHD is responsible for completing additional assignments as directed by the RHD and/or Quad Director of their respective area.  This may be related to involvement in a Living Learning Center or achievement of quad wide goals.

X. Compensation for the position includes an on-campus apartment/lounge.  The ARHD is required to live on-campus.
