Do you have an issue with students leaving their laundry past the time in machines? Do their peers get frustrated with them? Are there piles of clean laundry on the floor and a line of angry residents outside your office? Yeah, we’ve all been there.

To alleviate this issue, I have my RAs do a program at the beginning of the semester (sometimes during the first floor meeting) where each student is given a fridge magnet and a variety of sharpies. We have students write their name and room number, and their phone number if they’re comfortable. The students place these magnets on any machine they are currently using. If they forget to set a timer and pick up their items, the next resident who needs the machine can visit that room or give the student a call to have them pick up their clothing, instead of unceremoniously dumping it on the floor.

So far, this solution has been effective and students love the opportunity to get creative. From a community learning standpoint, students are now holding each other accountable and meeting people from their hall they would never have contact with otherwise. I’m looking forward to seeing how it progresses.
