Trading Stalls - Community Bathroom Program

Description: I designed this program around the TLC show ‘Trading Spaces.’ I saw that almost everyone in my hall like that show, so I decided we should decorate the worst room in the dorm – the bathroom!

Instructions

  1. Residents signed up in teams (we have 10 stalls – including shower and toilet – so there were 10 teams). Once the teams were set up, they were told whether they would have a toilet or shower stall (if they had a shower stall, they had to keep the items waterproof).
  2. They had a week to come up with their ideas and to shop for items to use. I gave each team $5, but they were told they could spend more if they chose to.
  3. On the day of the program, they had one hour to decorate their stall (encourage preparation because of limited time)
  4. At the end of the competition, judges came in to pick the winning stalls. While the judges were deciding, I met with my floor to discuss ‘environmental hallway standards’ we wanted to have in place for the year (example: cleanliness issues with the sinks, paper towel usage, exc.). We also set up a box to have a yearlong can drive in our bathroom (a great way to make the program environmental and to have money for floor activities).
  5. The winning stalls were awarded prizes and everyone received awards for something great about their stall (I put the awards on paper plates to tie in our environmental theme).

Other Considerations:

  • Do at the beginning of the year so that environmental/cleanliness standards are set, residents can bond, and the bathroom can look great for the rest of the year.
  • Video tape the program! It’s fun to show them later on in the year.
  • Consult with your custodial staff and supervisor to determine whether this is possible, and if so, to come up with any and all rules.
  • Give detailed instructions - remember to keep safety and firecode regulations in mind.
