Spa Night

Name: Lora Burnett
School: University of Central Oklahoma
email: co_lora_do6@yahoo.com

Description:

We turned our lobby into a relaxing spa atmosphere.  We offered free manicures, nail art, herbal facials, makeovers, massages, and even nutritiously refreshing fruit smoothie drinks. We wanted a place where residents could come and relax and be pampered and just escape from stress.

Instructions Things Needed:
  • For the manicures:
plenty of nail polish, nail polish remover, nail art supplies (like tatoos and adhesive jewels), nail files, lotion for hand massages, and a few volunteers ( recommend at least two people for manicures and also for nail art)
  • Herbal facials: get recipes for natural facials from the internet or you can just use store bought stuff (but it's funner to make it yourself) buy whatever the recipe requires and also a container and facial spatulas (these are little plastic things for you to apply the facial with so that
you won't have to rub your hands all over some strangers face)
  • Massage: Hire a professional or get some volunteers that don't mind rubbing shoulders for awhile
  • Makeover: Look around for a Mary Kay or Avon consultant...luckily we had a girl in the dorms who did this and she did makeovers for free.
  • Smoothies: again, search the internet for recipes, but really you can get by with a few blenders and some fruit and frozen juices. Also make coupons for the spa attendees to turn in so that you can keep track of what you are making and also it's a good way to keep attendance
  • general stuff: Advertise for participants to bring their own towels (to wash off facials etc)Set up a CD player with some relaxing tunes (suggestions: Sarah Mclachlan, Enya, anything Celtic or new age), set up a receptionist desk in front and have people sign up for what treatments they want so that there will not be too much waiting.   Also, set up a waiting area with magazines. As usual, Be sure to plan everything well ahead of the event and have fun!!!

Oh yeah, who says this sort of thing is just for girls! A lot of the guys were offended that we wouldn't let them come to the event and be pampered (we did this only because a lot of girls wouldn't feel comfortable with guys seeing them in facials) so try this for them too! some of our "masseurs" came to me for manicures when they were tired of doing their jobs!

Other Considerations:

Aprons are really cute and easy to make....the mastermind behind this program also volunteered to make aprons for all the spa techs...we each chose fabric to fit our personal style...it added to the fun and made it look more like a pro job!
If you want to hire professionals to come and do treatments, call them well ahead of the event and try to get the best value for your
money. We at the last minute grabbed five guys in the cafeteria and told them to come rub shoulders for awhile. This was perfectly acceptable
and cost free. Trust me...a lot of guys are willing to rub girls shoulders...and the girls don't seem to mind either!  We also had only one person doing each part of the manicure center....you really need more than one person for each job so that there won't be a huge line
that's about all!
