Title:
Let's Get Cooking -or- Microwave Masterpieces:
You Can Cook WHAT In a Microwave? (If you don't
have a regular kitchen available)
Description:
The residents get to enjoy each other's
cooking and create a fun College Recipe Book.
Depending upon whether there is a community
kitchen, or there are stoves in the resident's
apartments, you may want to make this a microwave
cooking program.
Assessment:
Determine whether this would be a good program
for your residents by talking to them. If you
have been hearing complaints about dining services,
or have any other indications that your residents
want more variety in their diets but have no
cooking skills, this may be a great program.
You may also want to "harness" the
skills of those residents on your floor who
know how to cook. A high level of interest is
important on this one, as successful implementation
will depend upon both participation and assistance
from residents!
Preparation:
- Check
to make sure you know what the cooking policies
are in your hall or at your property. Remind
residents of these policies.
- Post
flyers and put an inivitation on every residents'
door. You may wish to include a sample recipe
that they can make for the program.
-
Find several cheap, easy recipes online. Search
"cheap easy college recipes". You
may also want to do a search for "Microwave
recipes." See
the attached recipe document for some good
ones.
-
Have residents cook their food on the day
of the program and tell them to submit any
recipes that they are using to you. (let them
know that you will be creating cookbooks for
everyone involved)..
-
Make copies of all recipes and have the residents
help you put them together. This did take
sometime b/c I made 30 copies of every recipe,
cut them, holepunched, and then tied all the
recipes to make a recipe book. Ask for resident
assistance with this process, or find out
how much your campus copy shop charges for
binding. You may also consider asking them
to donate their services in exchange for including
a coupon or ad in your finished cookbook.
Evaluation:
- Make
sure you provide an opportunity for formal
or informal evaluation/suggestions/recommendations
for next time you do the program. Find out
how they found out about it, what they would
recommend for next time, etc.
Advertising:
Simply
download, edit on your computer, print flyer
out in color, or copy onto colored paper. It
is also recommended that you use other forms
of advertising such as door hangers, email,
and as always, word of mouth. For this program,
table tents might be appropriate as well. Be
sure to check out the templates in the documents
section of ResidentAssistant.com.
