Program: Meet the Custodians
SocialDescription:
This is a simple program, and the beauty of it is that you can combine it with any other
Social program.
As an individual program, invite all the custodial and/or maintance workers who are
involved in you dorm to a general social. If you have a general Hall meeting at the
beginning of the quarter, this would be an idea time. Do a simple ice-breaker. Ask
the custodians to tell your residents a little about themselves.
If you are doing another social, encourage the custodians to be involved. As always, FOOD
IS A GOOD INCENTIVE, both for residents and custodians.
By introducing custodian to resident, you job gets easier (the residents can go straight
to them for help, instead of knocking on your door at 6 AM for a new light bulb!) and the
custodians job more enjoyable (would you want to clean up a dorm and not even know
the people living there?). The custodians I've meet here at my school love to know
the residents and love it when the residents stop to say hi or to talk. and in turn
they take more pride in their work. It helps everyone.
Instructions/Things Needed:
-Food
-Advertisement
-Custodians, Maintance workers, or facilities workers assigned to to your dormitory. (if
you can get supervisors, all the better)
Other Considerations:
-Find out more about the custodial workers than just what their jobs are. I had a
custodian in my dorm last year who was on the ORIGINAL Atlanta Falcons team and actually
kicked the first kick-off for the team in their very first game. People have alot of
pre-concieved notions about others based on their line of work, and janitors are a great
example of this. I bet none of your residents would want these peoples jobs. Show your
residents that there is alot more to these people then cleaning toilets or replacing
light-bulbs.
