ResidentAssistant.com - "Ice Cream and Salsa"

Program Title: You can use "Ice Cream and Salsa," which is eye-catching, or come up with your own title.

Description: Salsa dancing is extremely popular in most areas, so this program allows them to see a demonstration and get free lessons, all while eating ice cream sundays.

Assessment:

  • Determine whether this program is a good fit for the needs and interests of your residents (this can be done through informal polling, observation, or formal surveys). Find out if there is a Salsa Club on your campus who would be willing to come in and provide the lessons. If not, is there a local dance studio that would be willing to help out? (It's a good promotional opportunity for them).

Preparation:

  • Decide on a date for your event. Talk to your residents and fellow staff to find out what time/day would be ideal. Ideally, you should provide yourself at least 2 weeks for planning and advertising.
  • Determine a location. You need space for dancing and for observers to watch.
  • Locate someone to give the Salsa lessons and a demonstration.
  • Get ice cream and toppings
  • Make plans for advertising. Start advertising as soon as possible, but use several “waves” of advertising. You may wish to use the sample flyers included with this program. You may also want to use a building email list, banners, door hangers, global voice mail (where available), and as ALWAYS, word of mouth, the most effective advertising format.

Implementation

  • Arrive early & set up. Call your contact for the salsa instruction a week before hand, and the day before just to confirm and see if he or she needs anything (you don't want to have this person fall through, so it's good to maintain communication with him or her).
  • Make sure you have plenty of napkins, plastic and paperware, and serving utensils for the ice cream and toppings. Have cleaning supplies on hand for spills.

Evaluation:

  • Make sure you provide an opportunity for formal or informal evaluation/suggestions/recommendations for next time you do the program. Find out how they found out about it, what they would recommend for next time, etc.

Advertising:

Simply download, edit on your computer, print flyer out in color, or copy onto colored paper. It is also recommended that you use other forms of advertising such as door hangers, email, and as always, word of mouth.
