Finals Foods

Name:    Toni Jensen
School:  University of Wyoming (program completed at Casper College)
email:   tonijensen@hotmail.com

Description:

Finals Foods provides students opportunities to take a break from studying and interact with other hall residents.  Residents on probation may complete community service by helping with tasks such as cooking and cleaning

Instructions/Things Needed:

Plan a menu and advertise at least two weeks in advance.  Get residents involved in these tasks to promote the program.  Coordinate the menu with the school cafeteria.  I had students sign for one meal so this program did not cost the hall anything. Each RA is responsible for getting their residents to sign up for a count to estimate the amount of food needed.  My program included a winter barbecue.  The menu included. hamburgers, nachos, an ice-cream bar, potato chips, an ice-cream bar, and lemonade.  Assign the following tasks:

1.  Design Menu
2.  Get approval from school cafeteria
3.  Choose a date and complete advertising
4.  Design and distribute floor sign-up lists
5.  Estimate the amount of food needed and notify cafeteria
6.  Get the food from cafeteria (Make sure there is a kitchen in the hall.
    Set-up tables may be needed.
7.  Cook the food and clean-up
8.  Return supplies to cafeteria
9.  Evaluate program

Other Considerations:

We held this program at 10p.m. Sunday night the week of finals and had the majority of the hall participating.  Most residents seemed to enjoy themselves. Staff and resident involvement are crucial for making this program a success.  Some residents completed community service hours by through cooking and cleanup.  However, make an inventory of all items borrowed (kitchen supplies) and make sure everything is returned.  Supervision during community service may be necessary during community service  to make sure everything runs smoothly and so that nothing is stolen.  Plan a menu focused on residents preferences.  Be aware of vegetarians menu needs.
