Parent Weekend - Family Potluck

Description:

Our school has a "family weekend" every year where your family can come up and spend a weekend with you.  There are informational sessions, a football game, games for kids, etc...  Well, in our dorm (a first year hall) we decided to have a potluck.  We had all three floors in charge of a different part of the meal (ie desserts, sides & bread, salads).  We also had everyone sign up before the actual day so that we could provide the main course- lasanga.  We have a HUGE basement in our building, so we had it right in our own hall.  We also told everyone to bring their own dishes, and beverages.  It was such a success! We had over 150 people show up!  And we got to know lots of families and just socialize for a while.  The parents loved it because they got to meet the RA's families also.

Instructions/Things Needed:

  • Time!  It takes a while to cook all the food.
  • Location!  Make sure it is big enough because if your resident only have one sibling, with two parents, you end up filling up a room rather fast.
  • Lots of tables.
  • Water or other beverages.
  • Extra plates/ napkins/ silverware...etc... becasue someone always forgets it.
  • name tags
  • and about an hour or two to spend with your residents families!

Other Considerations:

Maybe not provide the main dish, because it cost us something like 130 dollars.  Which is a good chunk of our hall money.  Also, remember to set tables up so that they make people have to look at each other and talk.  For example... if your putting 2 tables together, make it a square not a rectangle.  Not as many people can fit at a square table, but it makes families look at each other and talk.
