About

Community Chain

Name:    Megan Murphy
School:  Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania
email:   mm2314@ship.edu

Description:

During our first wing meeting of the year, I wanted to stress the importance of building community in our wing.  I explained to my residents that becoming a community would involve everyone's ideas and participation.  I passed out strips of paper and markers, and asked everyone to write their idea of a strong community on their strips.  After the meeting, I joined the strips together to make a paper chain, and hung the chain in a central location in our wing.  It serves as a reminder of how important building a community is, and also that everyone's input is what makes a community work.

Instructions/Things Needed:

Construction paper, cut into narrow strips
Markers
Staples

Other Considerations:

Since many residents may never have lived in a residence hall setting before, it is important to explain the benefits of and reasons behind building community to them before doing a program like this one.
