Day
of Silence |
Advertise and get residents to sign up to participate. Pick a date
and call it the day of silence. The residents who participate cannot speak from 8am to 8pm
on the day of silence. They are given cards that read:
Day of Silence Project-"Date Here"
Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender rights People who are silent today believe that laws and attitudes
should be inclusive of people of all sexual
orientations.
The Day of Silence is to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred
oppression, and prejudice. Think about the voices you are not hearing. What can you do to
end the silence.They give them to people who ask why they are not speaking and to
whomever they wish. At 8pm invite an organization that understands gay issues to present
and educational disussion on gay issues, stereotypes, and how to become an ally. Have an
ice-braker before you start.
INSTRUCTIONS/THINGS NEEDED
At least 2 facilitators who understand gay issues. Campus gay/lesbian
organization. Gifts to give residents who decide to become allies e.g buttons that
say "I'm straight but not narrow". They can also make signs for
their doors that read that so have paper and markers.
Things to consider as you do this program and/or things you might do differently:
These discussions get heated really fast. Make sure you have at least
one professional that understands gay issues. Let participants know that they should
be respectful and share their opinions politely. At the begining, list things to be
avoided during the discussion. Have the participants come up with this list and put it up
on a board were everyone can see.
Let participants know that everything said should be confidential so
that people can express their feelings and ask questions openly. |
