Black Blockbusters
Human Awareness
Description:
This is really an "add water and stir" program. Each week, during the month of
February, which is Black Awareness month all over the country, show movies which feature
African-American actors and actresses. To give the program a little more structure, we
decided to show the movies in categories. The first week was "Academy Award Winning
Performances", where we showed "Glory", starring Denzel Washington, and
"What's Love Got To Do With It?", starring Angela Bassett, who was nominated for
an Academy Award in this movie.
Our other categories were, "The Sensational '70s", "Comedy", and
"African-American Directors". There's just so many categories and movies to
choose from!
Instructions/Things Needed:
Other Considerations:
-
Make sure you advertise, advertise, advertise!!!
-
Also, make sure that you choose a night that residents aren't busy on. In my building,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays worked best (we had 2 movie nights per week).

Related Program Submissions: Our campus is showing
a movie followed by discussion each Tuesday night in
February. The movies being shown are A Time to
Kill, Rosewood, Higher Learning, The Best Man.
There will also be a month long trivia game. Each
day a new question will be posted to the campus.
At the end of the month, the person with the most
