The
Names Project -- AIDS Quilt |
Description: After volunteering at The Names
Project in San Francisco for a day, I was humbled by the
experience of working directly with the world-renowned
AIDS Quilt. I thought it would be a great idea to
have my residents come together and make our own panel
for the Quilt and send it in to The Names Project for
inclusion with the AIDS Quilt. This would be done
in old-fashioned quilting bee form and all participants
would be charged $2 for entry. All proceeds went
directly to the purchase of needed supplies. We
would make a general panel for all who have died of
AIDS, and if any resident knew of someone in particular
who was inflicted with the illness, he/she would sew
his/her name on the panel. This is meant to be a
sobering experience and help students to think of others
more often and understand the feeling of loss.
Instructions/Things Needed: The great thing about
making a panel is that it can be as elaborate or as
simple as you want.
- Medium-weight, non stretch fabric (3' by 6') -
(represents the size of a coffin)
- Thread
- Needles
- Any other decorating materials, depending on how
elaborate the panel will be (markers, paint, paint
brushes, stencils, pencils, etc.)
Other Considerations: Contact The Names Project (info@aidsquilt.org)
or log onto its website (www.aidsquilt.org)
for more information on the specifications for each
panel.
