A
Different Life - Growing Up Gay |
Name: Amy Teeple
School: College Misericordia
email: ateeple@miseri.edu
Description:
Students fill out six cards which cover the following areas.
A person from your childhood with whom you shared secrets.
The names of your best friends in grade school.
A small valued material possession from your early teenage years.
Your favorite place.
A person who is very close to you.
A goal or dream.
You then ask the students to use their imagination to put
themselves in the story you will read. The story is about
what it might be like to grow up gay. Throughout the story, students
have to rip up their cards, because they lose those things in their
lives.
It really persuades students to think about gay issues from another
perspective.
Instructions Things Needed:You will need six cards for each
participant and a copy of the story.
The story with full instructions can be found at
www.qrd.org/qrd/misc/resources/a.different.life.homophobia.workshop
Other Considerations:
Make sure you have enough cards for everyone.
Also, it may help to post the categories for the cards.
Be sure you have someone with a strong reading voice
for the story.
