About

Points for Poverty

I have been doing a community service program in conjunction with Sodexho Marriott, our campus' food service provider.      How our meal plans are set up is that there are two elements.  we have Maroon and Gold (M&G) and Points.  the points are what are generally used in the cafeterias.  the problem with the points is that here at ASU they do NOT transfer from semester to semester, unless you buy the biggest plan that Marriott offers.  so every semester thousands of points are lost because people cannot use them up.

I had an idea that would give the students to donate points to charity.  i went to the cafeterias on 4 different occasions, and i had the sign up sheets at most of the residence halls on campus.  I went from table to table campaigning for points.  due to my campaigning and the help of the other faculty on campus, we have gathered an estimated 8,000 meal points to donate to charity (i myself got 6,300 points at the cafeterias).      Sodexho Marriott is going to take these points and apply the per point food cost (which here at ASU is $.62 per point) and purchase canned foods with them.  these canned foods will be donated to local food banks and homeless shelters to feed people at christmas.  this program has had great support all over campus

This program is very helpful and has exceeded my expectations of 2,000 points (Marriott expected 5,000).  i feel that if this is a common  problem in other campuses around this great country, this is a great way to put the points to good use and help make somebody's holiday season a little merrier.
