Advice
from personal experience
|
Hi. My
name is Cassie Pate. I'm a freshman and not an RA, but
I do deal with depression and suicide has been an issue
this semester. Most of the time if a person goes to
someone else (like an RA) and says they've thought about
suiccide, they just want someone to listen to them.
Suicide probably has crossed their mind and I'm definitely
not saying that they aren't serious. When they're
talking about it, it's a good sign. If they don't talk
about what they're feeling and thinking, they just keep
it inside and get worse. Unless they're standing there
with a knife or something, it's really not an emergency
situation. My suggestion, listen to them seriously and
ask them why they feel that way and what's going on
in their life. You do need to get them in touch with
counseling or something else, but be sure they know
what you're doing and why you're doing it (ie that you
care about them) otherwise it could be taken as a betrayl.
Just thought I'd offer a little personal experience
and what I've learned since dealing with depression.
If you want to write me, my e-mail is cpate@kltymail.com
. Thanks.
